would it work.be compatible?

I would not use that because of the unknown trigger voltage. I would get a Nikon speedlight if possible. If you need a low price flash, you may consider Sunpak 383 Auto. This flash has a low trigger voltage and costs $70, but it does not support TTL.

Probably not. The trigger voltage of the Vivitar 265 could damage your D40. Plus you'd have no compatibility with the camera's i-TTL flash circuitry.

Buy the top of the line flash that Nikon offers for your camera.

Choose an off-camera flash bracket. Visit alzodigital.com and check their offerings.

As with Edwin's reply, 'probably not'. You would also lose any of the digital functions. Remember that your camera needs to 'talk' to a digitally matched flash gun, and the Vivitar 265 is an analogue flash gun.
It would be best to go with the advice of the 2 first answerers on this one to protect the warranty on your D40.
