Light beer is all marketing. In brewing there is a direct correlation between the alcohol content of a beer and its calorie content. If a beer has fewer calories it also has less alcohol and therefore you simply have to drink more (pay more) to achieve the same effect.
If you're drinking light beer because you think it's "better" for you I would stop right now. Light beer is actually most likely worse for you since it offers very little nutritional value that you would find in a craft beer.

As a general rule, light (or "lite") beers have fewer calories AND less alcohol. While light beers go through a similar brewing process, producers first ensure as much of the carbohydrate content is metabolized into alcohol by the added yeast, then modify other flavor additives and dilute or extract alcohol from the beer during lautering.
Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram. Carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram. Converting more carbohydrates into alcohol might seem counterintuitive if the goal is reduced calories, but remember that some of that caloric value is consumed by the yeast and more of it is diluted.
As an end result, you typically have "regular" beers with 5.0% to 5.5% alcohol (by volume, not weight) with 140 - 155 calories and "light" or "lite" beers with 4.2% to 4.4% alcohol and 100 - 110 calories per 12 ounce serving.
If you use Yahoo! Search to find matches for the terms beer, alcohol, percentage, and calories you will find a multitude of listings detailing the specific calorie and alcohol content of any popular beer you would like to identify. You might start with the link I've provided as my source for this information.
Also, the specialty low-carbohydrate beers like Michelob Ultra or Budweiser Select are almost identical to the light beers. They often go through just a little more processing to reduce calories though - for instance Bud Light has 105 calories and Bud Select has 99 per 12 ounce serving, with the same alcohol content.

both, what is called Light beer (or lite in miller's case) in the US is a light lager style of beer. Mass produced lager (bud, miller etc) is already a relatively weak beer coming in at or under 5%, their light brethren come in around 4.2% and are basically just watered down versions of the regular lager.
In the grand scheme of all things beer there are many styles of beer, the most extreme beers have alcohol contents over 15% but those would taste nothing like any beer you're used to if an american light lager is your preferred style.

In Europe, 'light' refers only to the color of the beer. In the US, 'light' refers to the calories in the beer. Typically, a higher gravity beer will contain more calories and more alcohol, but this is not always the case.

Actually light has a few tenths of a percentage less alcohol than regular beer. Not many people know this.

Less filling tastes great was a good slogan because it told us fewer calories. If you don't get buzzed why would you buy it? Most wouldn't.
