Nicotine, very addictive. Seems to cause release of dopamine in the brains that has a very pleasurable effect so the smoker not only craves it but requires more to get the same effect. And one of the hardest things to quit too. It can calm people down, give them a sense of well being and relief from anxiety. Also, sometimes the repetitive habit of having something to hold and inhale, looking cool is hard to stop.

As mentioned above, the nicotine is the addictive chemical.
People can get "hooked" from the very first try.
Don't start.
I just quit last year after 20+ years. What a waste...

Nicotine - it is more addictive than heroin. Once a person starts smoking, it can take years to break the habit. Also, once an addict, always an addict. Even though we quit smoking (I am an ex-smoker) we always run the risk of starting again - just like a drug addict. Cigarettes are nasty business.

I think it's the levels of nicotine. The body gets used to the high levels cigarettes provide and then it needs to sustain those levels, so people want to keep smoking.
