There have been all kinds of corruption and abuse of power in the Catholic church. Why should we believe Catholic doctrine is true?

Doug Lawr- If "The traditional teachings, beliefs, and authentic practices of the Catholic church" were founded by corrupt men then they don't stand on their own. and I doubt the Holy Spirit dwells where there is evil and corruption. You can't say the Catholic church was founded by Jesus Christ. It was founded by Constantine who himself with the help of others made up doctrine that is contrary to what Jesus taught. i.e. the trinity, indulgences, ect. Their might have been some truth but it was lost by men trying to glorify themselves instead of God.

God's child I couldn't agree with you more but if you were truly taught by the Holy Spirit instead of men I think your beliefs would be different

Eh?
Why believe that it's true when you are only lapping up the lies.

No one is forcing you to believe. It is entirely up to you whether you believe or not.

EDIT....The Catholic (universal ) Church began after Jesus gave Peter (the Rock) the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, NOT 300 years later.Christ had promised the Apostles "I will send you the Holy Spirit. He will be your Comforter". After Jesus left them, the Apostles were afraid. So they hid themselves in the little apartment of Mary. They prayed and waited for nine days. This was the first Novena. Then on Pentecost, over their heads, the Apostles saw parted tongues of fire.A tongue settled on each of their heads. The Holy Spirit had come.At once they went out and began to tell everyone about Jesus. They spoke so strongly that thousands believed and were baptised. This was the birthday of the Catholic Church.

Your name describes you well.

The traditional teachings, beliefs, and authentic practices of the Catholic church stand on their own, and are not in any way dependent on the sinners who conduct them, or participate in them.

Even Jesus had his Judas, and Jesus never lied to anyone, so he never promised that his church would be free from corruption.

Jesus promised that he would protect the church from being overwhelmed by the forces of evil, and he assigned the Holy Spirit to maintain the truth and purity of its' doctrine.

The Catholic church has a 2000 year old tradition in place, consisting of a huge body of the world's finest theological scholarship, freely available to all, which fully documents all of its' claims.

In the end, the Catholic church MUST be true, because Jesus personally founded it and guaranteed it ... until the end of time ... and he never did that for any other person or group.

Check it out for yourself.

*is Catholic*

Truth is not dependant upon the quality of the individual who says it.

For example, if a murderer says that the sky is blue, does that call into verasity the blueness of the sky? No it doesn't and to call into question the verasity is utterly irrational.

So when we get to a question such as "is Catholic doctrine true?" we must look at the doctrine itself and not the person or institution to determine verasity.

Therefore, we apply the same qualities as we check for truthfulness in any subject to the truthfulness of Catholic doctrine.

What doctrine do you wish to check for verasity?

Jesus guarantees through the Holy Spirit the infallible teaching of doctrine in faith and morals. He is truth itself. Men in the church sin as all men sin do not confuse the sin of men with the Church Herself

In the same way that you believe in science. I mean science has been changing paradigms throughout the ages and not all scientist are good scientist.

The Church is still made up of people who are very well capable of their sins but it does not dimish the truth that they profess.
