Do some research on different breeds. A dog breeder can also give you information and opinions on the best type of dog for you.
It really depends on what you do and what you want.
Do you want a family dog? A jogging mate? Do you live in an apartment? Big backyard? Small backyard? How long/often do you work? Inside or outside dog? Big dog? Small dog? Non-Shedding etc.?
These are all things you must consider before you buy a dog.
Pounds/Animal Shelter's can also help, even find a Doggie Rescue. Puppies don't just come from petshops, try an animal shelter (most puppies in animal shelters come from pet shops). You may even find that a pet shop will push a certain dog breed at you so you buy the dog but the dog is not suitable for you. You can find that pet shops at times won't tell you the whole story/picture because all they wanna do (most of the time) is sell their stock.
Have a look around this site
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/
There's some good info on all breeds and crossbreeds and there's even a quiz that can determine a good breed for you by eliminating specific factors etc.
Also, a puppy is a big responsibility. Alot of work and patience. Do some research on puppies beforehand aswell. In the first few months they pee as they're not toilet trained, chew shoes and toys. Just think about it first. An older dog (not old old but like 1 or 2yr old etc.) might be a better option for you.

Golden Retriever, Collie, or a standard Poodle if you like bigger dogs.
These breeds are expensive, so why not go to the pound and pick a dog with sweet eyes. I know you want a puppy, but why not get an older dog that is house trained and needs the love a good owner.
Either way, give a dog in the pound a chance.

Mutts. I have never had a mixed breed that was not a great pet and that ranges from a Lab/German Shepard to a Irish Wolfhound/Great Dane, she was about 140 lbs.
An Old English Sheepdog is a big lovable clown.
A Beagle is a little lovable clown.
I have had problems with German Shepard's being to protective, great with the family but not too nice with strangers.
All in all the best, the most people friendly and the greatest lovable dogs have been my American Pit Bull Terriers. They love everyone. They do not know what a stranger is,

do your research on different breeds you may be interested in. Some dog breeds require much more work, some are more stubborn and hard to train, many require much grooming maintenance, and prone to all sorts of genetic diseases. Your best bet is to rescue a dog, lots of shelters and rescue groups will already be able to tell you the type of temperment your potential dog has.

theres PLENTY of puppies in the shelter that are begging to be brought home...thats where i would go...and + it will most likely be a mutt and they have less health issues and in my opinion are smarter...but if i had to choose a prebred i would like to have either a mastiff or a german shepherd! but my parents have Boston Terriers and they are alright dogs but they shed a lot
