I've been wanting a guitar for a while now, because I've really been getting into rock and metal genres, but I'm not so sure. I'm completely new to the instrument, but have a passion for the music so i think i could learn. Many people say i should get an acoustic guitar first, but i am a bit confused. I have played violin for 3 years and cello for one, and can read both trebel and base clef in case thats relevant in any way. It would also be extremely helpful if anyone can reccomend some starting equipment for me. The sort of music i listen to include AC/DC, Queen, Dragonforce, Breaking Benjamin... well you get the picture. Thanks very much if you answer! (sorry if its long, just trying to be informative)

one more detail.. turns out my dad already ordered me an acoustic saying i should practice on it first and that electric would be heavy, loud, and just plain ugly. He ordered it as a suprise, and its already on the way and with the holiday season returning it will be a pain in the ***. However, the music i REALLY want to play is in the rock genre, and im thinking, better no guitar then an acoustic. If anyone would like to counter my thoughts of acoustics or encourage me to press on and get an electric, please feel free.

Thanks for all the help, people who answered. Ive simmered down a little and decided to learn acoustic, and then used my own money which i've saved up in order to buy an electric guitar and play what i've really wanted to. Disappointed at first, but decided it works. Thanks for all the help people have given me, and feel free to still add more answers!

For Christmas one year, my Dad surprised me with a guitar! It was a simple classical guitar that I loved for years, till I replaced it with an acoustic guitar. You sound like you've already got Music 101 under your belt, so you should go ahead and get the guitar that you'd really like to learn to play! For beginners who need to build up callouses, etc., going classical first is good. You sound like you're farther along! Good luck! And happy plucking!

OK. The only adavantage with an acoustic is that you are completely independent of power sockets, should you ever want to take it away. Steel strung acoustics, or even electro acoustics are good to learn on and you can get the action adjusted so that they are as easy to finger as an electric. For the rock effects, though, you do need the amplified sound. My daughter has a Fender Squier Strat, which was not very expensive, and came in a package with a small amp. Peavey and Crafter also do something similar. Go to your local music shop and see what's on offer. Take a knowledgeable friend if poss. or ask the assistant to demonstrate for you. Choose the one you like the sound of. Hope this helps

not sure why people always suggest starting off with an acoustic, its actually more harsh on the fingers and you have to press the strings down harder to achieve a sound. i would suggest you buy a starter pack.. usually includes guitar, amp and all the neccesary things to start. take up lessons and in about 1 month you'll realize its not as hard as it seems. for the most part its pretty simple to pick up.
