Self-care measures, including rest and the use of ice for pain and swelling, are the best treatments for a broken rib.
Over-the-counter pain medications, including acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), can help relieve discomfort as you wait for the fracture to heal. If the pain is severe, injections around the nerves that supply the ribs (nerve blocks) can be used.
I suggest you return to the Doc and see if he can help.

The reason you cannot sleep is that the codeine is making your breathing go at a slower pace and yours lungs are to relaxed and are not working at normal intervals. If you prop up a few pillows at your head board and find a comfort zone there for yourself, you will be able to get some rest as your breathing is just to laboured to allow you to sleep lying down.I wish you the best and hope this may help you out a little.Take care of you........xo Annette Kendall
