I was a teenager in the 70's and my friends and I most certainly did not respect out parents. We generally thought they were idiots who only existed to make our lives more difficult. The difference between then and now is that we didn't dare express that disrespect in front of our parents, we were all terrified of the consequences.
I wouldn't want to go back to that culture of fear. While I think teenagers today need to be taught tact I don't think their views are really so different.

i think the reason is, too many of them grew up in a house, NOT A HOME. in a lot of those houses the children were IN THE WAY, and a hinderence on the parents lives. thats why some look for love and family on the street. then, they raise their kids like they were. i raised my children to know, they were my children, not my equal, and they knew i loved them.
i feel sorry for people who don't have that.

The parents only have themselves to blame if they're child is rude and talks back often. It's the parent's job to teach their children manners and discipline, and if they don't, how do they expect them to be respectful as they get older? People need to learn how to discipline their children.

The difference in today's children is that they don't fear their parents. As parents today, we are more open, encouraging and accepting of our children. I love my parents, but frankly, do not raise my children the way my parents did. Fear does not = respect.

Parents aren't nearly as strict and they frequently pacify their children.....if you want you kids to respect you, first you must earn their respect and stop trying to be their friends.
