Perie has a full-time job that pays $8 per hour at Adain Products, Inc. He worked 43 hours last week. The firm pays time and one-half for all hours in excess of 40 per week. Perie is single. He had worked double shifts and a great deal of overtime earlier in the year, bringing his year-to-date gross earnings to $41,800. He has also agreed to have $50 deducted from his check each week for savings. What is his net pay?

With no more info than that, I'm not surprised you are lost. You can calculate the gross pay as 40*$8 + 3*$12 - the three times twelve is the overtime. But unless somewhere in the homework problem it says what is deducted besides the $50 for savings, like what's deducted for various taxes, there's no way you can answer the question.

40 hours times @ $8. per hour = $320. times 52 weeks = $16,640. minus $50. per week for savings (50 times 52 weeks= $2,600) = $14,040

$14,040 subtracted from $41,800 = $27,760 of overtime pay year-to-date.

You will need to have the amount for Social Security, Medicare, Federal Taxes, State Taxes, Local Taxes, Health Insurance, and any other deductions, add those up and subtract from total gross pay for the year.

$14 040 in regular pay + 27 760 year to date in overtime pay + any other overtime pay = total gross.

Total gross minus all the deductions = net pay.

One issue with this work schedule is that he is certainly overworked because when you take the amount for overtime pay ($27, 760) and divide it by the amount per hour of overtime wages ($12.) that comes to 2313 hours year-to-date of overtime work.

Year to date would represent 48 weeks. 2313 hours in 48 weeks = 48.2 hours per week. Add that to the 40 hours per week Perie already works for regular pay, and the time he spends on the job comes to 88.2 hours per week.
