I think looking into shipping some of it home is a good idea.

I was moving out of Hong Kong a few years ago and really kicked myself when I didn't ship enough home and was stuck with an extra bag and the associated costs (about $100) at check-in. It also saves him the headache of dragging it to the airport, through customs, etc. I was really mad at myself as it can be kind of hard to move, say all your good-byes, etc. and then I had all this extra gear I didn't need to lumber myself down with...

Instruct him to make sure all his bags are equal. He'll be charged on the overrun on the heaviest one so make sure he distributes books, clothes, etc. evenly.

Tell him to be really nice at check-in. I've actually gotten away with this several times when it was only over by a small amount. They've given me a break. It's in their interest as the paperwork alone can be a headache.

Hope he has a safe flight and a happy homecoming!

Depending on the carrier, extra luggage can cost an arm and a leg. I have a friend that recently flew British Airways and had to pay more than the luggage and contents were worth!!! She was pretty upset, but went ahead and paid the extortionary fees.

The airlines know that they have you trapped when you're checking in for a flight - what option do you have?? Plan ahead - know how much the extra baggage will cost. Check with DHL (it will almost certainly be cheaper).

Here's a shocker - if the extra luggage costs so much, what's the difference between an economy ticket with luggage fees, and a business class ticket?? I only spent $500 to upgrade to business on a trip back from the Philippines - that $500 doubled my luggage allowance, gave me a nice seat with plenty of room, free drinks on the plane, a better meal, access to the business lounge, and VIP handling.

Best of luck to your son.

Yes he will be able to pay at the counter. However, for comparison purposes it will cost him more. It would be cheaper for him if he were to send the unaccompanied luggage via cargo first. Unless money is not an object.

I think he meant that it is going to be expensive...so if your son is on a tight budget , it could be a money problem. He should call his airline and ask what there charges are for extra wt.

He'll be able to pay extra at the counter. Don't sweat it. For the love of Pete though don't send his stuff via DHL. All they are good for is losing stuff.
