The reason for the large, multi-car crashes at Daytona and Talladega comes from the "pack racing" at both racetracks. When speeds at both tracks started approaching 200mph, NASCAR required everyone to put restrictor plates on the engines to slow the cars down. The plates essentially cut the amount of air flowing into the carburators(yes, they still use those instead of fuel injectors.......), which in turn helps to slow the cars down. The problem is, once you slow the cars down, ultimately you end up with 100% throttle, foot-to-the-floor, pack style racing where if one driver has a tank-slapper moment or twitches just so slightly, you have the potential for a multi-car crash, a/k/a the big one. Ironically, the potential for these kinds of crashes are less likely(but not impossible) at tracks such as Lowe's for the above reasons; restrictor plates are only used at Daytona and Talladega.

The big-ones as you refer to or the big multity car wrecks or at those two race tracks for a few of reasons
1: There is the highest speed there than the other race tracks.
2: They have the Restrictor race place in place which bunches all the cars up together. On little misshap and it wipes many cars out at once.
3: this race tracks drivers can go 4 wide around the track while the others you can only go 2 0r 3.
I hope this answers your question.

Not only Lowes, but any smaller race track, on a restart, if a wreck happens up front, its gonna be a big wreck.
At Talladega and Daytona, that risk happens due to the restrictor plate racing that goes on. With cars running 2-3, even 4 wide, in one huge 43 car pack, one screw up at the front, and where the wreck happens will look like a junk yard.
Pretty simple really

A couple of things that contribute to it are the speeds they run and the brake packages they use there. Because they are on the throttle nearly the whole time they don't run much for brakes. The smaller calipers are beneficial in creating less drag but then they can't stop as quick. That, along with not much reaction time makes for some bad wrecks. Also, at Daytona and Talladega they use restrictor plates that make everybody run about the same speeds. They also need to stay very close to other cars so that they can draft off of each other.

It isn't always impatience that starts the big one. Because of the restricter plates the cars are all bunched together like a 200mph parking lot, without the torque to pass or race. Spinning the tires, getting a little loose, missing the cornering line, a sputtering engine, all kinds of things could happen at Daytona or Talladega that would cause the big one.
Personally I am not a fan of rp racing, and especially not of big wrecks, because I like to see the cars race each other, which they can't do during a yellow or red flag.

I don't really see it happening at Loew's that often, but at the other two tracks it does. It is from restrictor plates bunching up the cars into tight packs. You have to use the air off other cars to pass. The air also pushes the cars around. So you got cars running real close to each other getting pushed around, contact is bound to happen. Now when one car starts to wreck, there is no time or space for the other drivers to react, so they all end up in it.

It occurs at Daytona and Dega because of the restrictor plates that bunch the drivers together. I refer to it as candy asss racing. As for lowes its because they continue to make "improvements" to the racing surface which typically results in flat tires in the middle of a corner collecting 10-15 guys.

These tracks get the big on because most drivers want to win it on the "first "lap to avoid the big one.But in doing this they let their gaurd down and end uptearing up 10 to 20 cars.
I love the big ones as long as all walk.

mlittle2 said it best. It is because of the restrictor plates. The cars are so close to each other in performance that they "pack up" and are riding around the track at 200 mph just inches away from each other, then BOOM the big one!

Technically, lately..a lot have chosen the Dale Jarrett method of hanging back until halfway! ALL Hendrick drivers(except Kyle), Stewart, A few Rousch drivers and JR all did it in the fall race. You got 2 choices...hang back and try to avoid the big one, or be up front!
