I don't think the world would be that different. Theories pertaining to evolution were being contemplated by at least one other prominent academic during that time; Darwin just published his book first. Good thing, too.

In religion only the chosen prophets get to know the 'truth'
In science anyone can do it. All they have to do is look. If Darwin had not done it someone else would have.
