because, for centuries they were the only ones who knew how to do anything (they built most of the Great Wonders of the world, cathedrals, etc...) most of the great leaders and inventors have been masons/freemasons.

this is a free world, becoming more free as time passes, and that freedom is because of freemasons --- the freedoms you have in the "western" world are based on masonic principles.

to some other responses:

* they do not rule the world

* they are not a secret society

* the edicts against membership in freemasonry are based on non-masonic groups in Italy that the Vatican feared were plotting against them for control of the people (in the 1300's); it has everything to do with money, politics, fear and greed and nothing to do with God, religion, salvation, etc... read the documents for yourself, freemasonry was not even mentioned in the original proclamations, then they were modified to include every group, if you interpret it that way you shouldn't join a corporation because you have to sign a contract (obligation) of secrecy - which incidentally would carry much more severe penalties if you broke than anything in freemasonry

The aims of Masonry are to spread the notions of charity, truth and fraternity; in essence to be a force for good in the world. They do so by accepting men of all monotheistic faiths without any prejudice. Because, for example, they refuse to purport that Christians are better than Muslims or Jews, some right wing Christian churches oppose them, most notably Southern Baptists. Actually very few churches oppose them and many leading spiritual persons are prominent masons are were many of the founding fathers of USA and later, presidents. The Jacobian, French and American revolutions were founded on principles of Masonry - Liberty, Fraternity, Equality, most Kings of England (the titular Defenders of the Faith) were masons.

To try to undo the damage that hateful, intolerant, narrow-minded, apathetic people do. Religions don't like the idea that all men are created equal and should be treated as such. we do.

If you mean Freemasons: because they have a right to be. Why are closed-minded, secular, intolerant people in the world?

There is no reason why they should not be in the world. However there is every reason why you should not become one. A majority of Churches, have specifically condemned the practice of Freemasonry, as incompatible with Christianity: Anglican Church; Roman Catholic Church; German Bishops; English Methodist Church; Free Presbyterian Church Scotland; Reformed Presbyterian Church, Ireland; Orthodox Presbyterian Church of America; Greek Orthodox Church; Dutch Reformed Church (Cape).
