I have claimed the dependent for the past three years and the Social Security card has been misplaced. Can I use the number without the actual card?

Yes you can.

I haven't seen my social security card in the last 16 years.
I've changed jobs twice changed states of residence and registered to vote. If I ever need it I'll go to the SS office or check their website.

Most preparers will want to see it to verify it, but if the same person did your return last year they might have it on record. Take in a copy of last year's return - sometimes they'll just accept that.

Sure can, I do it every year with my kids and hubby's SS# and not once have been asked to show a card.

Of course-Although if you go to a preparer they may ask to see it just to verify, but it isn't required.
