I am buying my Dad a full HD 1080p HDTV for christmas his vision is not perfect so I kind of want to get him a 47" (for $1499) but I found a 42" for $899 and I much prefer that price. Unless there is a big quality difference between Olevia and Vizio it comes down to paying an extra $600 for the extra 5 inches. How much of a difference is there between 42" and 47" HDTV? His viewing distance in his family room is about 7' - 12 feet.
Thanks

While 5" doesn't feel like much, it is a fair bit of real estate.

What I would suggest is building a simple mockup using cardboard using the actual dimensions of each screen. If you color each uniquely you can place the smaller in front of the larger to visually see the difference. It can be dramatic.

Another thing to compare is the actual resolution of the panels. If possible, take your father (or yourself) to a place where you can look at both in action. Make sure to look at them for several minutes with a critical eye.

Compare the contrast ratios too. Sometimes the quantity and type of connectors are important. Make sure the TVs support the variety of devices he may want to connect. Easily accessible auxiliary inputs on the front/side are important for things like cameras.

That 5 inches actually adds up.

A 42" widescreen has a viewing area of 754 square inches. The 47" has a viewing area of 943 square inches. That translates out to a 25% increase in viewing area.

i am comfortable viewing a 37" display at 7 or 8 feet away. my hdtv is 42" and i sit about 8 feet from it. so go for the less expensive olevia. it has a great picture!

The 42" will do him fine with that size family room. Ours is a 42" Sony, in basically the same size room, and I really wouldn't want anything bigger as it'd sort of overpower the room. Hope this helps.
