Tell me you aren't feeding him just milk, rice and bread? Dogs have nutritional needs that grains can't provide. I hate to keep saying this, but how many rice farmers have you heard complaining that a pack of wild dogs ravaged their fields? They dont'. The only reason rice or corn is put in dog food is as a filler, it has no nutritional value to the dog. The only reason for the new rice craze is that dogs have begun developing food allergies thanks to the over chemically processed foods we've been feeding them for the past 20-30 years. Look for a good dog food that doesn't have any byproducts in it, or any thing that reads like: "chicken meal" or "lamb meal". It's first ingredient should be some form or real meat.
As to the smell, it would help if we knew what sort of smell it was? Does he simply need a bath? Or is his bad nutrition getting the better of him?

POOR DOG.I have had 2 Danes and I can't imagine only feeding them milk, rice and bread.Where did you get this idea from? Did someone tell you this is a good thing to do?Why are you doing it? Where's the protein? I had a Dane that died from bloat at 8 years old and it is a horrific way to go.I would hate to see that happen to your Dane because of the diet. The only time I've been told by the vet to give my dog rice was when he was recovering from surgery or stomach problems and that was homemade CHICKEN and rice.I agree that if he smells it is probably his diet. How much does he weigh and does he have a lot of problem with loose stool?

I am not an expert on diets, however I know that adult dogs should not be given milk. Also rice and bread are simply carbohydrate's. Your dog needs PROTEIN For a number of years I have had German Shepherds, however way back I had Great Danes. If all you are giving your dog is milk, rice and bread this is not enough to produce heathy bones etc., This is not a heathy diet, YOU MUST LOOK AT A GROUP ON YAHOO WHICH SPECIALISES IN DIETS. Very soon you will have more than a smell, you MUST take dietry advise.

As previously stated the diet is very poor. Pups are generally weened by 6-7 weeks of age so why are you still feeding him milk?? The human species is the only species that drinks milk for pleasure. Put him on a proper diet, and see see if the smell subsides. After having fixed that problem, you find that the smell still resides, you're going to have determine where the smell is comming from. Is it an overall general order that returns a few days after bathing? Is it coming from his mouth or anus? Which could still be indications of digestive problems or worms. Is it coming from his ears? possible bacterial or yeast infection or mites. If you still think he stinks, perhaps your just not accustom or highly sensitive to natural stinky dog smell.

If your Great Dane smells bad then it is not in good health. An extremely smelly dog is one indicator of poor health in an animal.
Also, a dog cannot be fed a diet of milk, rice and bread. They need protein. I would strongly recommend buying premium HUMAN GRADE dog food.. no cheap brands, please.. right away. If you have been feeding him this way since he was a puppy I would also recommend taking him to your vet for a full check-up to make sure other issue have not arisen due to his poor diet.

MMMM ok milk ,rice, bread, milk contains too much fat for your Dane, rice will swell, in his gut, causing bloat, bloat is when the gut swells up so bad ,it can kill your dog,
Danes tend to eat to fast, and when they bowl is on the floor, they have to bend down to reach it , this cause more air, in the gut , not good, raise his bowl, the other factors are, hes still growing, he need small meals more than once a day. milk also causes dehydration, because he will have the runs more often , i own one big Dane he weights 160lbs 34 ins, but he eat , rice, once a week, and normal dog food. you need to test him, on all the types of dog food, that wont make him swell up fast, but are good for him, maybe consult your vet , the smell is bad guts, the milk is taken longer to digest, the bread has too much yeast in it, also causing , too much gas, to be projected.
my last point, is I'm no vet, so have him checked out, to be safe rather than sorry............ best of luck

The bad smell could be from lack of a proper diet... dogs need dogfood. Dogs can't live and be healthy on milk, rice and bread. They aren't vegetarians, they are carnivores and need meat and protien! Go get a bag of dog food from the store, see if that solves the problem.

Maybe he's in need of a bath. Milk, rice, and bread??? That's not a diet for a dog. What about some high quality dog food from your local pet store?

Why would you feed your dog that diet? If you can't afford a proper meat based food for this dog, you should give him to someone who can. Dogs are not vegetarians!
You're lucky if he really is healthy. He may have other problems that you're not even aware of. Take him to the vet for a checkup. And make sure you talk about his diet, and how it affects him.

It sounds like you need to change your dog's diet. For one thing, dogs are lactose intolerant. Milk is NOT good for your dog.
Your dog may need to be checked out for infection or other problems.
