If you want the PS3 to play in HD, you will need to get either the component cables or the HDMI cables.

Depending on which type of TV you have, it might be advantageous to use one cable over the other. If you have a 720p/1080i TV, you can use the component cables. For that matter, if you have the component cables for the PS2, you can just plug it into the PS3, and it'll work. If you have a 1080p, you will see slight improvements using HDMI cables, but it's not that significant of an improvement.

If you want to get the best graphics out of the PS3 with a HDTV you should get the HDMI cable or some component cables at least. You should be able to tell a difference. Even though I don't have a HDTV, I use the Sony component cables and the graphics are awesome.

No. You don't need an HDTV for a PS3 (even though I have an HDTV). I think that is why the PS3 came with AV cables instead of an HDMI cable.
An HDTV for the PS3 only makes the resolutions better (720p-1080i/p).
Happy Gaming!

Well if you have an HDTV and not getting a good picture, you might wanna make sure that you connected through component cables and not composite. Component cables are Yellow Blue Green and Red, the composite(inferior picture) is Red, Yellow and white.

I have a XBOX 360 and have it connect via component and it works fine.
