Sorry to say this, but the Mr. Beer system is crap. There is no control over the fermentation, and the recipe kits all use pre-hopped malt. There is no way to change a recipe or create your own.

You would be a lot better off (and a lot happier in the end) with a 'starter kit' from any local homebrew shop. If you do not have a local homebrew shop, check out http://www.midwestsupplies.com or http://www.northernbrewer.com. The starter kit includes all of the equipment you need to make 5 gallon batches (compared to Mr. Beer's 2 gallon batches). While there, check out the 'extract recipe kits'. These include all the ingredients needed.

A starter kit is a little more expensive than the Mr. Beer, and the recipe kits are a couple dollars more than the Mr. Beer kits, but the quality is much better, as well as making more than twice as much per batch. Also, if you ever want to upgrade, or expand, you can buy extra equipment.

Make sure to pick up a copy of Charlie Papazian's book 'The Complete Joy of Homebrewing' while you're shopping, this is the quintessential bible of homebrewing.

I would like to agree with Mitchell's advice. The Mr. Beer kit is little more than a novelty gift and if the person to receive it has any intentions of making brewing a hobby it has very little long term value and use.
