The 40GB PS3 cannot play any PS2 games. The only PS3 consoles that has nearly full backward compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games is the 20GB and 60GB PS3's.
The 80GB PS3 is also backward compatible, it just can't play as many PS1 and PS2 games as the 20GB and 60GB PS3

No, one of the ways they made the 40 GB Playstation 3 less expensive was to take out the circuitry that allows all PS 2 games to play.

No sir, no backward compatibility on the 40GB ps3. Might wanna try modding it , but it will void your warranty. Sell it on ebay or craigslist and put in some cash for the 80GB one

On the contrary, 40GB doesn't play them at all. Sony fatcats had removed all necessary hardware for that. They call it a cost reduction because of public requests.
