im sure most people do it outta habit and sarcasm... but im also sure people say it because theyre confused about thereselves and they wanna fit in with a minority so they say there aethiest... and yet they 'pray to god they past there next exam' and 'swear to god' and say 'oh my god'... listen if you say any of these you aint aethiest.. hands down...if you really were.. you would do your best to stop your self from sayin the word god.... now if you would say... 'Oh Your God' or something likewise... it would be a different story.. but people dont say that cuz it sounds stupid.. so they continue to contradict themselves

It's just a saying...kind of like a Christian saying "I'm so mad I could just kill you!" Does it mean that they will? Let's hope not. Oh, and it's entirely possible that when atheists say this, they are being sarcastic. Or ironic.

In today's society, the word "god" is often tossed around loosely. It's getting to the point where "god" has very little to do with this figure of religious authority.

I would agree with the fact that it contradicts itself.

Ive never in my life heard an athiest say I swear to God, someone probably just said it to you sarcastically or as a joke.

Well why if you ask someone if God is everywhere - they say yes. And yet they do things in private that you would never even do in front of your best friend - yet they do them with God supposedly watching them.

For some, it's a habit (from having religion before deciding on atheism). For others, it might be intentional for the sake of irony.

Maybe they're making a joke. Or, they could be using the figure of speech without realizing it.

Hm.. if they meant it literally maybe. However, it is just a figure of speech, or perhaps done out of sarcasm.
