Leadership books, something for his desk, a nice picture frame, a nice framed picture of something inspirational, a new bag for his laptop, a subscription to his favorite magazine, or one that he is interested in the subject matter.. That should cover most budgets.

It's not appropriate to give your supervisor a gift. If that's the custom in your office, yes, do it or look like a cheapskate, but strictly speaking, it suggests you're currying favor. It would also be ok if it was part of a gift exchange, you know, everyone pulls a name and gets one person a gift. But not on your own.

It is appropriate for the boss to give presents to everyone. It would be alright for you to give everyone, including your boss, a small token gift. Maybe bake cookies or make fudge...something like that would be fine.

If you're going to give your boss a present, it would probably be best for the entire staff to give him one collectively. As for what, why not ask his wife for suggestions?
