Mine are 1.0 inches for top and bottom and 1.25 inches for left and right but I'm not sure if I changed them by accident.

You did not change them. They are the default margins.

That sounds about right for Word's default.
What you should watch, also, are the defaults of your printer. Every printer comes with set defaults which do not necessarily match Word's.

These notes pertain to Word 2000.
To find the defaults of my printer(s) - without having to look it up in the User's Guide -- I open a new document.
Click File, Page Setup
set all margins to 0
When you click o.k., you will be told that the margins are outside of the allowable and asked if you want the program to fix them. Click Yes - the margins will reset.

You can change the margins of Word's normal.dot (template) by opening a document,
click File, Page setup.
set margins then click Format, Font. Choose a font.
Then, on the bottom left, click "default."
You will be asked if you want to change Word's template for normal.dot.
Click Yes.
Future new documents will reflect those margins and font.
