Seems like if I want my car back, I shouldn't get a settlement check too. My car really isn't damaged too much. I am not complaining....I get $2000 out of it and my car is easily still drivable.

Better have your car checked by a local body shop. You could have more damage to the car then there insurance carrier is stating to you. Remember they do not work for you they work for the insurance company. Be sure the car is safe to drive. (bent frames can cause a lot pf problems) You may have more than the 2 k. worth of damge. Check it out. best of luck

This does happen with older cars with not much value. It does not take much damage to "total" one of these cars but to drive and mechanically they are fine, not "salvage" as many say. Total loss only means that the damages equal or excede the value of the vehicle. If your car is only worth $2000, it does not take much damage to "total" but only $2000 damage is not very much.
Many years ago I insured an older man that had 3 not at fault accidents. His car was OLD & the other companies just paid him the value of $500 for the car. They were actually small dents, cost more than $500 to fix if he wanted to but since the car was only worth $500, that was all he got. They just sent him the check. They never bothered with the title, it was still a clean title because the car was still in good working order, just had a few body dents. It would have cost the insurance company more than $500 to take the vehicle & junk it or send it to auction & to possibly get $500 back, probably less. It was cheaper for them to pay the $500 & let him deal with it. He never bothered to fix the car because the dents didn't affect the little value the car had left & he could still drive it safely.

Because if the car is a 'total loss' and the settlement was only 2K then the 'salvage' is worth almost nothing. It's just as easy to let you retain it than dispose of it. By the way -- you are in for a HUGE ordeal if you attempt to get another tag from the DMV with a salvage title.

If your car was totaled you would not get it back. It would go to the salvage yard. Call the insurance company that is settling the claim and ask them what is going on.

If you got it back, it'd likely be under a "salvage" title, and worth a lot less.
