When I try and move one of my icons around the screen, it automatically places it in the same row as the other icons. Is there anything I can do (for example: Properties) to change this?

Right click on the desktop, click view and uncheck Auto Arrange.

right click on your desktop
click Arrange Icons By
make sure the only checkmark is "show desktop icons"
if auto arrange has a checkmark, then click it to uncheck it.

right click the desktop and hover over arange icons by then uncheck auto arange

right click on ur desktop.
select "arrange icons by" and deselect the "auto arrange" option.
