While fishing on an Indian reservation in New Mexico, a young Indian boy was using a home made reel. He found some discarded line with an attached hook. He then tied on a small rock and wrapped the line around a Sprite can. He then caught a grasshopper and placed it on the hook.

I watched him for at least an hour casting the line and reeling it in slowly, wrapping the line around the can. I did not see him catch anything but I admired his creativity and resourcefullness. No doubt that this method would eventually catch a fish.............and hey..........there's an answer for you when on a limited budget.

For fluke fishing you could use light tackle, even ultra light tackle. Use a small reel like a Shimano Sphero or Sedona.
