Brands that you should consider are:

Cannon
Panasonic Lumix
Kodak
Casio
Pentax
Nikon
Olympus

Choose a camera that accept SD card rather than other types of card because SD card is the most popular format (so Sony is out). Most camera around the $ 250 will have an anti-blur feature, so you should check on that. If you can take a sample photo at the shop, they usually let you.

I won't tell you the exact model to buy because you should buy one that fits your budget of $ 250. All the above brands are good.

Samsung S630 or Samsung s730 are both amazing (and only $100 and $130) Kodak easyshare models are decent and you can get a decent one for under $150. Make sure you get at least 4 megapixels. I prefer 6 or 7. You want at least a 3x optical zoom. Digital zoom means absolutely nothing. It doesn't matter WHAT THE DIGITAL ZOOM OR TOTAL ZOOM IS. ONLY THE OPTICAL ZOOM!

Samsung s630 and s730 are Really, Really great!

Get one that takes an sd card. Buy some nimh batteries (rechargeable batteries) They have saved me dozens of expensive disposable and batteries.

Great Brands include:
Nikon
Samsung
Kodak
Canon
Sony Sony is good but they don't take sd cards :( I wouldn't recomend them.

one element to evaluate is that Canon makes use of what i might call a common reminiscence card, SD. SD enjoying cards are great decrease priced. A 2 gig card is probably $5 and could carry 1000's of photos of the utmost high quality decision. Sony makes use of their very own proprietary style which expenses greater and no longer often works in something yet yet another Sony product. Olympus makes use of xD which together as greater value-effective than Sony stuff remains no longer interior the mainstream.

I would look at the Canons. Try to find one with a viewfinder, because sometimes it's hard to see with just the display if you are in bright sunlight. And I would get one that uses AA battries. With rechargeable ones, you will always have batteries. But if you should use them up when you are away from home, you can buy AAs anyplace. I have a Canon p&s and am very happy with it!

Casio Z75 or Z1050 is a great choice, nice and thin, lightweight, shoots photos and video with sound. Easy to use controls and a 2.5" screen to view.
