I don't like to assign it because I view Xmas as family time. I have had requests from parents and from students though. Some want it to prepare for the January tests. Others want extra credit. If I did anything, I was going to give a website and ask parents to sign off that students spent a certain amount of time working on the Pre-Algebra problems. feedback?

I think the website is a good idea, I feel that kids need a break from the day to day homework. But, just enough that they don't forget what they need to learn.
Merry Christmas!

I'm not a parent, but I used to tutor high schoolers and teach college students, and I think that homework is beneficial. Holidays are family time for me too, but I still have to finish my projects that I have to present in January, so it's good to teach kids that they can't fully let go.
Maybe assign them problems for extra credit, or give them problems that they can use as a study guide, make them turn the problems in, then give them a bit of extra credit for it.

As a parent, I keep up with my kid's school work (they're only in elem school) so I review with them things they learned the week before break a day or two before they go back to school, usually for about 15mins. That's really all it takes for them to go, "Oh yeah! I remember that."
I'm a teacher as well and I hated assigning homework over the break but I hate when the kids come back and I have to reteach everything I taught before break.
What I did when I taught in the high school for 2yrs was I gave them a packet the week before break of things that would be in the midterm (jan test). They had the choice to do it or not to do it. If you did it, great. If you didn't, that was your choice. I also gave a very small extra credit project that took no longer than 15 minutes to do. I'd give it to my 50 students and get back 45 of them after break.
Now that I teach elem school, I give them a copy of what we'll be doing the week after break before they go away on break. I sort of "push" parents into going over it during the break with their child so the week afte break isn't pure torture for anyone.
Best Wishes =]

lol at the person who can't spell mandatory and is advocating no extra work!

To answer your question: a website is a good idea, but most kids are more computer savvy than their parents, so it's not likely to be very accurate with children who can hack things nowadays.

I'd say give the extra credit work and don't do a review when school starts again to help the kids who were too lazy to do the EC and stay brushed up on their information. I always hated how those students would get to review everything and I'd sit there extremely bored waiting for some new information.

This is a tricky question because many parents will be against it. However, I think a reasonable amount of homework does no harm. Sure kids need time off, but they also need to prepare for life after school. So I say some work keep them in the mood of learning, and is an opportunity to get a little head start on school life after vacation.

Yes, only if the students are having problems in your class, I don't believe it should be a problem. When children have time out from school they tend to loose some of what they learn. It is nice to know we still have caring teachers in school Thank you and keep up the good work.

It's not that I want my children to have homework, but it's a necessary thing. Sure, it's Christmas break; however, a little bit of homework never kills anyone. I expect my son to have some to do, I do know that there is a book report due sometime after Christmas, and I plan to work on math with him whether he has math homework or not.
The mom who is totally against homework is quite immature in her thinking. Homework is important. Teachers teach at school, and education is reinforced at home with homework, plain and simple.

As a student, I dislike the idea of HW over break even though it is given. It's unfair because they pile so much on us it takes away half the break. i do like the idea of extra credit though, that way i can only work on the classes, I HAVE to. That's my opinion even though it's biased.

I think they should have a resonable amount of homework over the break. Sorry, but school is their job. And almost any kid will tell you they don't want it :)
They'll have time to relax with the family, play and do work.
As a parent and former teacher I think it's totally appropriate. And I can't believe parents have the nerve to ask you not to give homework. Isn't that your job? To teach children....

i think the kids do enough homework though the week, they do need a bit of a break, but if the kid it self wants to get home work though the Holiday's it up to them.
