I'd like to point out that the Israelites did indeed have their right to their free will respected by the Lord. They sinned over and over against the Lord. Due to their continual unrepentance, as well as false repentance, they had to be punished.
God is still here, alive and well. Looking at all the disasters the Israelites went through in the Bible, I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of them felt the same way you did.
That nation bore the yoke of slavery many times. The prophets sent to Israel were mistreated and killed. Tradition holds that Isaiah was stretched out in half between two horses, and sawed in half. Even Jeremiah the prophet had his own complaints against God, and with all the things that Israel was plunged into, I'm sure there were Israelites who could not see God nor His miracles at all.
The nation of Israel is indeed focused upon in the Bible, but that doesn't mean that they were the only ones God cared about. Assyria was one of Israel's enemies, and yet God sent the unwilling Jonah to them to preach repentance, so that they would not be destroyed.
Not only that, but because of God's promise to Abraham make him into a great nation and bless all the peoples of the earth through him, Abraham became the father of a nation that the Messiah came from. And since the Messiah (Jesus) came from the Israelites, it makes sense that the Israelites are the focus in the Old Testament. I guess that does make it seem that the other nations were just overlooked by the Lord, but that isn't the case.
I mean, look at King Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. God sure helped his country out, making him a great king and Babylon a great country. Israel was even told to submit to them (the Babylonians). Of course, this is only one example. We don't know about the other nations, but we can be sure of this: God had His eyes watching over all the nations.
Now, finally, to answer your main question: God is here, waiting for you to come closer to Him. With every step you take towards Him, He takes a step towards you as well. Talk to Him and read the Bible - He is not a distant God, and I can guarantee you that if you seek Him with all your heart, He will be found by you.

The age of miracles? That is what some of the more fervent believers would argue - the burning bush, etc are all the miracles of God which were more easily explained as such in the days of legend. Now when a bush is burning, someone is led by voices, struck by lightening, water turns into wine we seek to rationalise and use the science of logic to explain away. There is still plenty of miracles even for the non-believer. We just chose to be more cynical and questioning.

God is indeed alive and the story of the Bible continues. The first part, the Old Testament, has been fulfilled in the New Testament with the coming of Jesus Christ. The stories continue after the death of the last apostle John, the death of Paul and Peter. Up to now, the continuing encyclicals of the Roman Catholic Church on very real issues such as abortion, euthanasia, etc. are indeed from God. Also, manifestation of God's mercy thru the authentic apparitions and miracles proclaimed by the Church show us that the story is ever continuing in the individual lives of people who seek God and do His will according to the teachings we have already been given. These all have one message: repent and obey, but most of all to do all these for the love of God.

Trying opening your eyes and looking. He is still performing miracles on a daily basis if you look. For example, you mentioned "ending and rebuilding cities", but are probably not aware that the thing that started the revolt that would topple Communism in Poland, Europe, and then the USSR was a revival and a preacher in Poland. God took down the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain in your lifetime.
Hopefully agnostic boy will get around to reading history sometime, and realize that it was the preaching of Protestant ministers, and the work of Christian politicians like Wilberforce in Great Britain who brought at end to slavery. (Rent the movie "Amazing Grace some time.)
Even when God was doing the things you listed, there were people who show the miracles and reject them: they asked for a Golden Calf during the same time the 10 Commandments where being written. Jesus appeared to over 500 people at one time following his resurrection, and some of those who saw him rejected it (See Matthew 28).
I see miracles, healing, changed lives, and the moving of God in the lives of hundreds every day. You just have to open your heart and look.

You're taking the Bible too literally. People of ancient times needed those kind of fables- the world was a much more raw and mysterious place. People didn't read books and learn as much from distant cultures to draw their own conclusions, they were rather primitive and still thought God wanted sacrifices and stuff. The Bible was compiled of stories for the people of those times. So we could say that things have become more modernized, and we make sacrifices in different ways such as throwing off the temptations presented by a media and a much different culture nowadays. There is a form of God, but it's dualistic. There has to be suffering or we'd appreciate life even less than we already do. God is of the Presence, Creation. The world is made up of its atoms and its creatures and that Spirit that animates all of it and life is HERE, now. You can't look up to the sky and a perfect Disney guilded other realm to solve the quandries in this one- this IS Paradise.

Where is he now? In heaven on the throne (Father) Sitting at the right hand of the father (Son, Jesus) , living in the hearts of all true servants who seek him with all their hearts (Holy Spirit) That is where God is now. The Son will be returning to earth real soon and all your questions will be answered in a heartbeat. Are you ready to meet with God? It does not appear so . God does love everyone. He is not willing that any should perish. The fact that Israel still exists should be a fact of history to be seriously considered before one rashly rejects the God who created and loves him. Free will is not a card. It is a choice. And God does respect your free will choice. Choose God and truth and live forever with God. Reject God and be separated eternally from God. God will respect your choice and send you where you desire to go. Come to Christ.

Jesus Christ brought earth shattering miracles but rabbis rejected him. They knew that he was sent by God, but still they
rejected him. Similarly Christian clergy rejected prophet Muhammad about whom they were informed in Bible.
Since they chose not to recognize Muhammad, the continuity
of prophets broke. In the past a messenger used to come every 600 years or so. Now 2000 years have passed but there is no prophet . Muhmmad came 570 years after Christ and his message is a continuity of Bible. Just read once to
see for yourselves.
With the advent of Prophet Muhammad many miracles occured. A land mass of 1.2 Million square miles was won
by Islam and within 50 years Islam became the leading religion of the world. So if you want to hear God and see His
new miracles, read Quran, just once with open heart.

God most certainly did respect the Israelites right to free will! He got them out of every jam they got themselves into for 40 years! He gave them free will, and they decided to do everything wrong, so God punished them.

well its really very simple, 1st God does not operate on YOUR time schedule, the acts described in the Bible were often Many Years apart. God had to act with those people in that way because of their hard headness
(Isaiah 1:14-20) . . .YOUR new moons and YOUR festal seasons my soul has hated. To me they have become a burden; I have become tired of bearing [them]. 15 And when YOU spread out YOUR palms, I hide my eyes from YOU. Even though YOU make many prayers, I am not listening; with bloodshed YOUR very hands have become filled. 16 Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the badness of YOUR dealings from in front of my eyes; cease to do bad. 17 Learn to do good; search for justice; set right the oppressor; render judgment for the fatherless boy; plead the cause of the widow.” 18 “Come, now, YOU people, and let us set matters straight between us,” says Jehovah. “Though the sins of YOU people should prove to be as scarlet, they will be made white just like snow; though they should be red like crimson cloth, they will become even like wool. 19 If YOU people show willingness and do listen, the good of the land YOU will eat. 20 But if YOU people refuse and are actually rebellious, with a sword YOU will be eaten up; for the very mouth of Jehovah has spoken [it].”
You notice he gave them a chance to repent, but they didn't , but soon God's son Jesus will cleanse the earth of all wicked people (& we are all wicked by birth Ro 5:12..) However if you take in proper knowledge you can share in the wonderful blessings he has in store for righteous mankind

If you read the bible, you will understand in the beginning, God's intervention was necessary. He was building the future, nations to come. All working it's way to Jesus.
Today the nations are great as he said they would be. What's next to come is in the written in the Revelations (and the new testament). I don't want to spoil the ending...
