during a talk with an all knowing atheist and a god loveing true christian baptists, two things about my religion came up that until now I did not realize to be true.
aparently we are one of the most sexist religions in the world, because the bible is sexist and we dont allow women to be priests, and we force pregnant women to call the "mass of tissue in her stomach" a baby, who knows it could really be an ostrich right?,
however on further enlightenment I found out that we also worship mary and other saints, including females, forgive my simple mind but if we were sexist against women, why then would we sink so low as to worship them, and their ilk?
please help this poor and confused catholic

That is odd. I strangely have found that amongst Xians, the Catholics are becoming the most accepting. Homosexuals are allowed in their churches, they no longer claim a geocentric model of the universe. They no longer say the world is flat. They allow abortion for certain reasons and are mum about Evolution.

Actually, it might interest some readers to know that Christianity took one of the most shocking steps towards respect of women in the history of civilization.
We made it a habit to ask a woman if she actually wants to marry the guy standing next to her.
We women never had a say in the matter prior to the advent of Christian marriage. That's pretty revolutionary, considering women have been viewed as property - objects - for a large portion of human history. I've always believed that God loves His daughters just as much as He loves His sons, but the human end of Christianity does still have a long way to go in that direction, despite its revolutionary first steps.
But you are absolutely right. It's terribly confusing to be on the receiving end of accusations that Catholics worship women when we should not and that we also treat women despicably because we have no respect for them.
I think perhaps they need to get their stories straight before they start slinging mud.

Peace.....sounds like we really need some "healthy" comments here.....while the bible seems to have put women down, believe it or not, they held women in higher esteem because they cherished the fact they brought new life into the world, nurtured this new life and handed on faith and traditions. This was their true place in family. Should it still be? I believe so, when I see how many families are splitting up, women are too tired after working all week to care for their children properly without rushing and cramming what they need in the way of nurturing and education as well as family life. Of course this does not apply to all situations, but it is on the increase as statistics prove. Children also are being farmed out more and more to daycare centres and babysitters, left alone after school, having meals alone, turning to drugs, alcohol and sex at earlier ages and virtually having no faith, morals and manners. Women DO have a vital role in the lives of those they bring into the world. One has to be parent, physician, psychologist, teacher and many other roles in the life of family. This is why when working in the world to keep up with society pressure and finances, they simply cannot do it all, and somebody somewhere suffers for it. Then the other option to decrease the pressure is to have abortions. Once again, we don't WORSHIP Mary and/or the Saints - we pray to them for intercession based on their most heroic life of virtue, endurance and suffering. They are example for us. Do you have a picture of a loved one on your night table? This is no different because you want to have the memory and spirit of them close by.....By the way, you are not confused, the people you are speaking with are the confused ones.....God Bless, "orthros"

Geez,as a Catholic I worshiped God and His Son Jesus, and the gift of the Holy Spirit,As for Mary I acknowledge that She is The Mother of Jesus, and pray through her for intercession between a lowly sinner like me to even approach Jesus as I know I'm not worthy.Next time ask your God loving Christian Baptists,of what religion did they off shoot from? Why,were the rules too hard to follow?
As for your Atheist friend, does he not realize Atheism is a religion/belief.Your right though, your mind is simple, maybe you should try putting things into it.for once.

Oh man, you're leaving out our most horrible crimes. Why, we don't believe in Sola Scriptura! I mean, just because St. Paul commanded us in Thessalonians to follow sacred traditions handed down from the Apostles, what did he know, anyway? Why, you'd think he wrote a big chunk of the Bible or something!
And then there's the terrible pagan belief that Jesus really meant what He said when He told us that, "This is my Body and Blood." Surely His meant that the Host was sorta, kinda like His Body, right? He couldn't possibly have intended for us to think that wine could become His Blood -- even though He turned water into wine at Cana.
But the worst part of all is that we aren't TRUE Christians! That's right, you heard it from me first. . .we don't believe in some guy named Jesus, much less follow His commandments. We have Buddha nailed to that Cross in the front of our churches, and we secretly dance around the altar backward at Mass and chant mantras to Odin.
Yep, that's us Catholics, all right -- the worst scum-sucking heatherns in the entire history of Heatherndom!

You forgot a bunch of things:
Buying (or is it earning?) our way into heaven
Inventing purgatory as a fundraiser because bake sales weren't feeding the bulldog
Drinking wine, which is clearly prohibited by the bible
Prayer beads
Worshiping the Pope
There are many more of course, but I have to get to church, there is a sale on indulgences.
I too can be very sarcastic ;)

thank you Adam that is very enlightening...what upsets me most about our paganistic practises is we baptise babies!!...i mean isnt that child abuse?... didnt Jesus say baptism is only symbolic and specifically for 13yr olds and over?
im beginning to think protestants have got it right after all catholics arent christians, we killed most the true christians off so the Church Jesus established has been forced to go underground, become invisible and preach a message that is contradictory...all because that Constantine fella made it illegal to persecute catholics...thats our fault right?
i do pray we will get it together soon the "One God, one message for all" is getting pretty lame

Based on your understanding (and I mean the most basic) of human biology in your second paragraph, I suspect you are to young to have a driver's license.
That said, it sounds like you consider yourself a "Catholic" because you happen to be in the same car when your parents drive to mass. But that's as close to being a Catholic that you appear to be (based on your post.)
