If your racing strictly NEXTEL/Sprint Cup, 37-40 races, depending on if you are able to qualify, if you are invited to the Bud Shootout (which you get by winning a pole the previous season), All-Star race participation (If you havent won a race, you will race in the NEXTEL/Sprint Open, and if you win, then you race the All-Star race itself), a qualifying race at Daytona to see if you can race the Daytona 500, and the 36 races of the season itself.

If your a driver thats is strictly NEXTEL/Sprint Cup, but you race the occasional Saturday night dirt track race (like Kenny Schrader), or do charity races (like what a bunch of drivers did this past season at Eldora), it could be around 45 or so races.

If you decide to race Busch Series or Truck Series races as well, that number could skyrocket from around 45 to 50 races, all the way up to 70+ races before everything is said and done.

It all usually varies from driver to driver, and how much he wants to race.

The Sprint Cup has 36 points races, a Gatorade duel qualifier for the Daytona 500 (150 lap race). Every full time driver will race at least these 37 races. Drivers may qualify for the Bud Shootout by winning a pole in the previous year, or having won the Bud Shootout previously. This bring the total to 38 races, possibly. There is also an All Star race. To be included in this event, you had to win a race in the previous year. You may also get in by winning a race in the beginning of that particular year. Or, by fan vote. Also by winning the Open which takes place directly before the event. Lastly, if you have won the race in the past 10 years and are not already in it by one of the other ways, you qualify. The total is now 39.

There are also 35 Nationwide Series races, and some drivers do race all of those and all of the Cup races. That brings it to 74 races. Add in a few companion truck races, and some drivers may run 80 or more races in one of NASCAR's top three series. This does not include any local racing or Tony Stewart's Prelude.

There are 36 Nascar races every year, but only 43 spots for each race so not every driver gets to race every week. There are also different racing leagues that some drivers get involved with like the Bush series, and many drivers like Tony Stewart and Kasey Kahne are involved in dirt track racing. The answer to your question is dependent on the driver, they all race in a different number of races.

You got a lot of answer that are very close, but they need to clarify something.
36 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points races,
a qualifying race,
plus exhibition races, (the Bud shootout, and the All Star (WHICH HAS TWO RACES THAT ARE OPEN TO EVERYONE NOT IN THA ALL STAR RACE ALREADY) So there are a possible of a maximum of 40 race that one driver could enter at the cup level.
Also 35 NASCAR Nationwide Series races
And last but not least, 25 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races

There are 36 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points races per yer, two other exhibition races, and one qualifying duel race. There are also 35 NASCAR Nationwide Series races a year and 25 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races a year. The drivers have to qualify for each race in order to be able to be in the race. Other than this, the drivers can race in other local series, other racing divisions, etc.

In the long run, it is just plain up to the driver, his sponsors, and his team.
