Unless your baby is different than mine forget the Dr. Suess for now and concentrate on very simple hard board books like Goodnight moon (trust me you will know every word), Any of the barnyard dance books are awesome as well. My daughter's favorites have always been the touch and feel books and any book that has pictures of real babies in it. She also LOVES to look at a picture album with her whole family in it. Don't worry though your little one will love Dr. Suess soon enough and he/she will pretty much love anything you read to them. I would sometimes read the newspaper to mine just so they would get the concept when they were really little. Good job for realizing how important it is to start the love of reading from day one. Best of Luck to you!

I work with preschoolers, ranging from 3 to 5 years in age, and some of the favorite we have there include:
Llama Llama Red Pajama
The Napping House
Rainbow Fish
Any book written by Gina and Mercer Mayer
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Lou and the Swamp Ghost
Puff The Magic Dragon
The Big, Big Cow and the Tiny, Tiny Boy
There are a lot more though... I don't have all of the author's names, but a search of the title should give you their names.
Also, as a parent of 5 children, my experience has been that if you start reading on a nightly basis from day one, they will like ANY book you read... so you can get the preschool books and be assured that even the babies will enjoy it! Hope this helps... good luck! :)

The Sandra Boynton board books are *great* for little ones. My daughter is almost 6 and still likes them. Moo, Baa, La La La, and Barnyard Dance were our favorites. Eric Carle books are wonderful too.
Other great choices are:
Fiddle-I-Fee, by Will Hillenbrandt
The Owl and the Pussycat, by Edward Lear
The Tale of Custard the Dragon, by Ogden Nash (if you don't mind that a pirate gets eaten)
The Paper Princess, by Elisa Kleven

for school your child will probably need books from the caldecott award winners and newbury award winners... these are like classics for elementary age children. Polar Express was a caldecott winner. Jumanji was another.
Nick Jr. books are cool, but their characters are constantly changing as far as favorites..
Baby Eisteins are good for small toddler age children and very diverse in storylines.
The Kissing Hand series is VERY sweet and wonderful stories. There are 3 books in this series.
Clifford The Big Red Dog from PBS is also very good. You could read it to them as toddlers and when they go to school they would learn to read by 2nd grade.
I hope this helps.

well, my son loves the books that have the noise buttons on the side. obviously the sound part interests them, but they will grow with them for many years. but he loves books "extra stuff" like the touch and feel books. he has a lot of baby einstein books. there good too. they usually have extra stuff in them too.

Board books are good for babies. They are almost all pictures, they are small and they are durable. They can drool on them, chew on them and they are almost indestructible! Babies also LOVE pictures of other babies.
Maybe you should have a book shower for you little one! It's great that you are already getting a good collection started!
