Depression is a disease. It is a chemical embalance in the brain which requires medication to correct the balance. Faith and prayer , with medication work well. Christians get depressed just like anyone else and it is not due to a lack of or a weak faith. It is not a cross to bear. When Jesus talked about picking up our crosses, He meant that we should go spread the Gospel message and that we would be persecuted for it by some and some of us would suffer for it. That is our cross to bear, not illness or depression.

Because depression is as much of an illness as the common cold. You would take tylenol for this, so why not take an antidepressant for your depression? A person who is depressed simply cannot move past his/her thoughts. He or she might even know that he or she is depressed and try to fight off the "bad thoughts" - suicide, "I am horrible", etc - but can't, the same way you can't just will away a cold. Physically, depression is caused by an imbalance in brain chemicals. You could compare this to the more "socially accepted" hormonal imbalance issues, which can be as serious as diabetes or just a minor bout of PMS.

That being said, some Christian denominations, such as Jehovah's Witnesses, are against certain types of modern medicine. However, I believe that God wants us to use our innovations and that depression is never your "fault", it is honestly extremely hard to get out of it. It is always good to supplement the medicine with therapy (if you want/need it), journaling/drawing/other type of artistic expression (helps a lot), and/or prayer if you believe in God.

God gave us the free will to decide what we want to do, accept Jesus as our Savior or not. In a lot of cases you will see that people get depressed due to their circumstances, I know that if a person is doing some thing wrong like having an affair or committing fraud or what ever the case is you will start feeling depressed. That is part of Gods plan you have a consioun.

To come back to prayer, it only work if you are truly a christian and you have faith like a child. God does not like being toyed with. If you really repent on start living a religious live God will answer your prayers.

One thing to remember the Bible says if we ask we will receive, a lot of people misunderstands that part. If you ask God for lots of money or a new porch, He is not going to give it to you because you don't need it. God will provide in what you really need, not what you want.

2 part question.
Part 1 - depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, although, possibly more often than not is misdiagnosed. There are few very rare tests to determine if those imbalances truly exist. So, Christians are still succeptible to disease, just as non-Christians, we are all under the cursed society created in Genesis with Adam & Eve's sin. Christians just have hope and know where they are going once they leave this world.
Part 2 - Prayer does work, but not without faith. Mark 11:24 - "Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you."
And for kicks - Part 3 - Jesus bore that cross for you at his death. You may have a cross to bear, but he's always there with you to share your load. Matthew 11:29 "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls."

Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance most times, and that sort of thing just doesn't go away by praying, wishing it away, thinking happy thoughts, or any other pseudoscience method some people like to put out there, and even anti-depressants don't work for everyone. You don't need prayer, although it helps if you truly believe in it, but what you really need is therapy.

Prayer may work. But god also gave us brains to figure out medical problems, and depression can be one of those. Also, being a Christian doesn't take away all the bad parts of life. Someone may have to face child abuse, divorce, sickness, anything and still be a Christian, but their life has still been what it is and they will have to deal with that. God wants us to be the best we can be, and to be healthy, and if in some cases that involves medication, then that's what needs to be done.

As the Giant Killer pointed out, Matthew 9:12 says plainly: "Hearing [them], he said: “Persons in health do not need a physician, but the ailing do. "
There's nothing wrong with getting medical care when we're sick or injured or depressed. Prayer is good for all things. But if I had a broken leg, I'd still go to the hospital to have it set and placed in a cast. And I'd still take medicine for pain.
CLINICAL depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Faith can help a person endure but only medicine (or herbs) can "cure" it.
There's nothing wrong with needing medicine.

I dont think being depressed is a cross, I think it is a chemical imbalance. God words through anti depressant drugs so dont think its wrong to take them, I myself take them. Prayer certainly helps, but when you are led to a doctor who can prescribe the medicine, be wise and follow that advise. God never sends depression, he allows it, but it comes from the evil one, david and job were depressed, read the psalms, have hope, as they say too. One day your prince charming will come and sweep you away!!

Prayer can help this I have seen it. Does it every time? No
I have seen prayer work with physical illness, financial problems, and mental illness just to name a few. Keep in mind this is coming from a computer network guy...but just because you have not seen or understand how vlsm or eigrp works does not mean that it does not exist and does not work. I have seen prayer work and yes it chemical levels in your brain can be altered by prayer.

a daily meal of the word of God should keep a person from depression.

many people have said that prayer doesnt work. but having an attitude like that means ignoring the people that have a testimony and evidence in their lives that prayer works.
