No. It's impossible to track down who downloads anything from the interenet. The only way you could get caught is if you start putting up stuff for people to download that has a copyright on it.
As long as you take and not give, you shouldn't have any issues whatsoever. Millions of people use P2P software, which is what Limewire is, and no one gets caught. Just be careful not to download suspicious stuff, it's pretty easy to get a virus if you're stupid about it.

First, it depends on what you use it FOR. It is perfectly legal to use limewire, or ANY file sharing software to share files with the permission of the copyright holder. What is illegal is sharing copyrighted files without the permission of the copyright holder. In the case of songs or movies, you can count on not having permission. Even if you download files illegally, you are much more likely to face fines than jail time. If you were supplying copyrighted files for others to download, there is a chance you may actually go to jail.

You could get sued for copyright infringement for distributing music to people who don't pay the artists for it. This could cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars and you'll wish you're in jail. Google around and see how many college kids have been sued/settled with the record companies already.

no illegal downloading is not a criminal crime...although a women recently was made an example of and was fined $700,000 dollars for illegal downloads. She will have to work the rest of her life to payback that fine. I doubt anyone else will get such a stiff penalty.

No, if anything goes wrong, they will give you are warning at first. If you follow to use it then you will probably serve a small fine.
