While you sleep, your saliva flow decreases dramatically. It may even stop. Your mouth gets dry and your saliva thickens. Without the moisture saliva normally provides, your breathing can dry your mouth further. If you typically breathe through your mouth at night, especially if you have a problem with snoring, you're particularly susceptible to morning breath. For those of you who use a CPAP machine for Sleep Apnea, the problem can be even worse.
