You are paid all the way through the Academy.
Get ready to run - a LOT.
The Academy is in Elysian Park, it's across from Dodger Stadium, it is at the top of a series of several hills, and you will be running up and down those hills every day. It seems like mostly up, I am not sure why.

If you are enrolled in the LAPD Academy, you are an employee of theirs and are being paid to attend and pass the Academy. Though there may be a small percentage of other cadets/trainees from other local Agencies, the vast majority are LAPD employees and are being paid.

This is direct from the link provided above me:

"The starting base salary for high school graduates is $54,475. If you have at least 60 college units, with an overall GPA of 2.0 or better, you will start at $56,668. (These salaries are as of July, 2006) If you have a BA or BS (four year) degree you will start at $58,881.

You begin earning your full salary on your first day of Academy training. "
