So yesterday, I decided I needed to get back into running shape. I haven't really run for an extended period of time for awhile. I was going to start off small, but once I started running I felt fine and was surprised about that, so I kept going. I didn't feel any pain while running-and only a little a few hours later. But I woke up this morning with very bad calf pain. Is this just from not using my calf muscles to that extent for awhile? Will this start feeling better soon? It's quite hard to walk normally to push with my toes. Does anyone have any tips to help reduce this pain (ice, stretching, etc?)

Here's what I recommend you do.
Take a pain killer, preferably an anti-inflammatory. This will ease the inflammation in your muscle, causing most of the pain to ease.
Use a hot pad for 10 minutes, then rest for 10, then use an ice pack for 10. Repeat as long as you can handle it.
If you have Bengay, or icyhot, or any other muscle pain reliever, put it on and massage your muscle at the same time. Do this after the pad cycle. I've found that bengay+hot pad= really weird skin sensations. If you don't, try just massaging with lotion.
Stretch out the muscle whenever you get sharp cramps. put your hands flat on a surface and put your body at a 45 degree angle. The do a lung with the cramping leg in the back. Attempt to get your heel flat on the floor.
The main cause of muscle cramps like this is actually an imbalance of electrolytes, not muscle inflammation (although both contribute). If you drank a ton of water, or none at all, your body is now out of whack. Drink Gatorade, powerade, or propel. Drink these when you work out. The sugar is bad for you, but washing out your body is even worse. Also try to get enough potassium, calcium, and vitamin D. Eat bananas and drink dairy. If this is not helpful or is not easy with your diet, take supplements.
Good luck!
