RE:
What is a used Smith and Wesson handgun worth?
I have a 25 year old S & W .357 magnum handgun. It is a model 686 "L" frame with 6" barrel. The finish is satin stainless. It is in very good condition.

As a Smith & Wesson Dealer, I can tell you that your Smith & Wesson 686 Distinguished Combat Magnum "L" Frame 357 Magnum Stainless Steel Revolver 6" Barrel, Adjustable Sights, Hogue Black Rubber Grips... in Excellent 100% Original Condition is worth $385-$450 BASE PRICE. If your 686 has a wide S&W Factory installed Target Trigger & Target Hammer, and a "White Outline" Rear Sight Blade you can ADD another $50-$60 to the BASE PRICE listed. They were only produced in Satin Stainless Steel finish in this model. (The Model 586 was the Blued Steel version/model)
NOTE* The Model 686 "L" Frame was actually introduced in September 1980 (Not 1991 as advised earlier by another answerer) I personally own (2) of these in 6" with 3 digit serial numbers, that I shoot and hunt Deer with regularly...

If you go by Xavier's smith and wesson calculator, it only gives you a value of 225. However, if you search a site like gunbroker.com or get a copy of the blue book of gun values you should be able to pinpoint the price much more accurately. Though it should be noted that since its a pre-lock, that will almost certainly add to its value in the eyes of a lot of people. I'd say anywhere between 350 and 500, but thats only my novice estimate at best.

I checked a few auction sites for you, and the ones that have actually sold in real auctions recently have sold in the $370 to $430 range. This is what you should expect to sell it for on an auction site. For a local sale, expect $350 or so. A dealer may give you $250 straight up, as he needs to consider reselling it and making some money for his trouble.
