Getting a refund isn't based on your age, it's based upon your tax liability vs how much was already paid in via wage withholdings.

At age 17 you can almost certainly still be claimed as a dependent by your parents. Therefore if your income exceeds $5,350 from wages only you'll owe some tax and will probalby get a partial refund. If your income is less than that, any income tax that was withheld will be refunded to you when you file your tax return after the New Year.

You don't get a percent back. You get back any overpayment. If you made under $5350 you won't owe any federal income tax, so if you had anything withheld for federal income tax you'd get that back.

Your refund isn't just money the IRS hands out to people. Think of it as buying a Big Mac and Fries and paying with a $20 bill- you'll get change, but it's not some kind of gift from McDonald's. A tax refund is just like getting change at the cash register - it's getting your own money back that you paid, if you don't owe it.

You won't get back what was deducted for social security or medicare. If they took out state tax, you might or might not get some or all of that back - it depends on what state you live in.
