Is the importing settings in the preferences of itunes only when adding cds. Or it is for adding from file or computer too.

You can add other files from your computer, too. There should be an "add file" or "add folder" option in one of the menus... I think under the "file" menu.

a.) the importing option is for Audio CDs only.
b.) you can go to File and click Add to Library.. and it will let you import files.
c.) you can just drag and drop files in there from your desktop or other folders.

you can also add files just drag them in to the itunes folder
