I don't recommend this because refrigerating the onion deteriorates the taste of it. They should be kept in a dry, room temperature place, like a pantry. Chewing gum while cutting onions actually works in preventing you from tearing up. Also, cutting the onion under water.

I put a cutting board on burner of stove, turn exhaust fan on high and cut or chop them there. the exhaust sucks the vapors out of kitchen and you will never shed a tear. works every time.
