Dog.
Cats won't help you with anything. Although a dog is a hassle.

I like both. I was a dog person growing up, but my wife and I have had nothing but cats.
*If* you have the time and the patience to train a dog and give it the attention it needs the first year, a dog is fine. If not, a cat would be the better option.

I'm an avid animal lover. I like dogs, but don't have the room for them. I have had cats all my life, don't think I could handle life without a cat. I currently have 3 black and white indoor cats. Two 4 year olds and an 8 month old. Cats make the most awesomest companions.

How much time do you have? if you don't work all day and want a companion for walks and going to the park, etc, get a dog.
If you're gone at work all day or travel or want a more low maintenance pet, get a cat. Actually, get 2 so they can keep each other company while you're at work or traveling. I have 2 cats and they're great. One plays fetch and the other greets me at the door every day and follows me around like a dog.
You can find very personable cats at the local shelter.

Unless there is someone at home all day a cat. Dogs need to be let out for bathroom duties and it's unfair to the dog to be expected to hold it all day.

Depends on how much free time you have. Cats are independant and are perfect for people who live in apartments and/or work long hours. I'd love to have a dog, but not until we buy a house so it has a yard to run in.
