I'm sooo lost. Everytime someone asks me what i want to do when i get older i have NO clue. my bestfriend (that moved an hour away a while ago, we are still bff tho =). and like she seems to think that after school we're gonna move to BC to get this thing, and then go to California, and do some school there, and then we're gonna be fashion designer or w.e. Okay, so the question what type of career shoudl i persue? I want something that has to do with animals, and nature and forests and stuff. But i don't want to be a vet i can't stand to stick needles in animals. My dad has wanted to be a forest ranger but he couldn't because he couldn't stay away for 2 yrs. I want some sort of career that doesn' have me sittin' at a desk all day, but will allow me to go outside, and someday hopefully give me enough leeway so when i do decide to ahve kids, my work wont interfere with it (i know i'm thinking ahead alot, but hey i can't help it) i can't think of a career i would like to persue. help pl

Take a career choice test. Asks you a bunch of questions, all yes or no, usually, then once you answer all the questions it lists out jobs you could do well at.

Think what you can do. I've decided to be an Aeronautical engineer. I figure shoot way high, so even if you mess up you wont be totally screwed. Anyway just think what can you do. What do you like. Where do you live (school wise) and what makes you really think.

Example: Since you want to be in animals, think of that field. Vet is gone (good choice tho..) anyway...
A ranger sucks (no offense) , you get to hike and collect bear s***. Not that marvelous.
A Zoologist (Zow-Ahl-ih-jist) is a good idea. Problem is you have to be a veterinarian to become a zoologist. Some other things are a trainer (again a vets degree), but one that needs none is an animal park maintenance manager. Sounds lame but they make lots on money and don't need a vets degree. They do have to have some math of course . I think like Calculus AB maybe... Not positive...
So things like that may sound appealing and fun. Do what you want but take this advise strongly. ( I do it as a part time job, JK)

Example:

I can build (Lego's, start small) and do lots of math, and i like science (nerd).
I like planes and space craft. Always have. I live in Vegas, so i get a few good schools (magnet is great). I have lots of great high schools to deal with.
What is involved in planes? engineering. So aeronautical Engineering. Or even a normal field of engineering.

For all i know i could be a manager at McDonald's making a decent paycheck. It really depends on how you think of life.

Hope it helps

Sweetie calm down-you're not lost-YOU'RE NORMAL. Quite honestly, i didn't find out what my "calling" in life was till I was 43! I did lots of different things. Try them all. Call the National Forest Service and ask about volunteer opportunites so you can get your feet wet without making a lifelong commitment. I know the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire has a lot of volunteer opportunities. By the way, thank your BFF for her dreams for you two, but gently let her know that because you don't share a dream doesn't mean you aren't BFFs. If she is truly a friend she will encourage you to explore these wonderful interests you have in our natural world.

Hmm, Well, the park ranger works if you have a house in a foothill/mountain city. But, you could also (even if its just in HS, be a river guide), Somethings of those nature. Maybe pursue Environmentalist? You basically find ways to help the environment (Lol, don't mean to be instructing you), and you get to go into the field sometimes, say if you lived in the city, you would have a chance at some 2-5 day trips here and there into the environment, hope that helps. =D, email me if you want any more help.

Personally, you should know what you want for yourself. Maybe you could volunteer at a local animal shelter, you may not be outdoors 24/7/365, but you sure as hell won't be sitting behind a desk all day. You also might want to look into running your own business or something along the lines of you being your own boss. Be a dog groomer or work at a kennel even. You can also maybe be a zookeeper as well. Good Luck.

fFirst of all, how old are you. If you are younger than 16 you do not have to decide on a career now. You should starting thinking about what you would like to do but nothing is etched in stone. Just finish high school if you are still there and when you get to college take required courses first. It seems that studying zoology, park ranger, a person who trains dogs to work with the handicap ( I do not know what they are called) would be good choices.

How old are you??sounds to me you are too young to make any sort of decision yet.
My advice is that you sit down and make a list of what you think you would like to do,then give each one points, delete till you have three left and brainstorm those till you get the best answer, then go for it.
You need not be a VET,but work in an animal rescue site whatever, good cause and you would get great satisfaction knowing you are helping animals that need a LOT of T L C.
Good luck.

Try being a Game Warden, forest ranger or work in a nursery, even at a camp ground or zoo...

I think working at a zoo would be neat. You would be local and you would still be working with the animals and not necesarily be poking them with needles.

attached is a link to the San Diego zoo. I love that place and that city!
