I ran into an interesting phone conversation today. A lady called looking for a male to "service" her female. Well she said her pom was born in 2000. She has never been bred and has never went into heat until recently. I told her her dog was 7 years old she had to come into heat unless she was spayed . She said her dog never made any messes, I told her that some dogs do not make messes they keep themselves very clean, but she should have noticed swelling and male dogs coming around. Now get this load of crap. She said she was from down south where it is warmer and dogs don't come into heat as often there. (she just moved here recently) I told her she did not have a clue as to what she was talking about, all dogs come into heat unless they are spayed. I told her her dog was too old to safely breed and have puppies, and I did not want anything to do with this or her dog. Then she got on the vet thing........

You had the right attitude, you said the right things.
Like many closed minded people, I'm afaraid you won't be able to say anything more to this woman that she is doing the wrong thing.
Too bad for the dog (and the potential pups).

She either has one of the rare dogs who have "silent" heats, she's an idiot OR she just got the dog and didn't want to admit that she knows nothing about it's reproductive history. If the dog legitimately neve came into heat, there is something wrong with it and it shouldn't be bred anway.
Either way you slice it, it's a bad idea.
YOu will probably not convince her not to breed - some people will not listen, learn or take advice from anyone no matter what. BUT you can refuse to "service" her or the dog. You won't have the headache of dealing with someone who doesn't care if she breeds substandard dogs and who, I promise, will be a pain in the **** during the entire pregnancy and puppyhood. You think she's annoying now? Try collecting the stud fee.
Leave her and her irresponsible breeding to some other sap and be glad you were smart enough to see through her crap.
I've had to deal with her type far too often. Now, instead of just saying, "No, and here's why blah blah blah." I ask for copies of OFA certfications, thryoid tests, brucellosis tests, etc etc etc as well as the results of CGC and CD obedience exams. Shuts 'em right up.

What a load of crap. Dogs come into heat just as often in the south as they do in the north. The truth is, MORE dogs get pregnant in the south because there is a longer breeding period with the warmer weather.
Are you a vet? I have no idea how you're going to convince this woman to not breed her dog, but some statistics might help. How many successful births actually occur in dogs that old?

You probably can't but it's worth a try. Tell her that you won't be able to allow your male to breed her female, as she is far too old and you couldn't in good conscience breed to such an old girl. Tell her tho that when she is going to contact others, that she should show up with proof of all the breed specific health testing as well as current proof that her dog does not have Brucellosis, or anyone she contacts is going to laugh her right out of the place. When she starts checking into the cost of the health testing, maybe that will change her mind.

This woman is a COMPLETE AND TOTAL IDIOT!!!!!!!!! I am from the South and have had a several dogs that had "silent" heats. The only way to know that a dog with a "silent" heat is in heat is that she will show the same signs as a regular b*tch - but only the unneutered male dog very close by will be trying to get at her.
You are trying to be a smart dog owner. I congratulate you!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately breeders could care less about their animals as long as they keep on breeding and bring in the money...and there's not much anyone can say to them that could change their mind.
That's why I am in favor of breeding restrictions and regulations...even if it mean charging a substantial amount to breed them..with the hundred of dollars the puppies bring...they can afford it.

WOW. Just... wow. I'd ask her why exactly she wants to breed her sweet little Pomeranian, especially knowing that they're difficult to breed successfully. Tear-jerker stories go here.
Or you can take the sassy approach - unless her female is a CAR, she doesn't get "serviced."

You probably cant, she doesnt know what she is dong in the first place, so I dont think how much you try to talk her out of it, she will do it anyway........people like this is what causes all the problems, they dont know dogs, they breed them, the pups are the ones that will suffer and her female......
good luck, and I will give you a lollipop if you talk her out of it....
