I always tip all service personnel 20%. These people are on their feet all day (or all evening), the pay is low, they have to take a lot of crap from the public. I think 20% for decent service. More, for exceptional service.

Yes. As a carhop for over 3 years, I definitely have enough experience to say that we deserve it. At least in my area, all carhops are paid as waiters/waitresses. And no, bringing out your food is not all that we do. Unless you work at Sonic, you have no idea what carhops actually do. We do in fact take orders, make ice cream, make drinks, bag food, and skate to your car in scorching heat or freezing cold to bring you your food. On top of that, we bring you anything else you need (condiments, etc.), take out the trash, sweep the parking lot, and clean the bathrooms. And yes, that is all while being paid as a waiter/waitress. Whether you order one drink or $50 worth of food, the carhop deserves at least something. If you do not want to pay for their service, that is fine-- use the drive thru or eat somewhere else. I always give all my customers the best service but if a customer comes continually without tipping every time, I notice and usually do not give them my best service. Anyone that is talented enough to carhop deserves a tip. (I know this sounds like I hate my job, but I don't. I love it, just wish people would realize what carhops do and start tipping).

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Depends if I have the money or not. Usually, I pay with a card at the menu.. and if I have a buck or two, I usually give it to them. No more than $1-2, though. I tip enough for everything else.. when it comes to fast food, don't sweat it. there a millions of non-tippers out there. Its ultimately up to you.

I was a waitress for years. I usually tell the car-hop to keep the change unless I pay with a $20.00 for a $4.00 breakfast. These kids don't make more than minimum wage, and they work their butts off in crummy weather...give up the change your just going to throw in your ashtry anyway. ESPECIALLY if your going to send her back for extra ketchup, salad dressing or whatever. Make it worth her trip.

That's personal service and deserves a 15% tip just as if you were seated at a table.

Please do, my sister was a carhop in college and they have to do the trash in the coldest and hottest of weather. Drunk people throw drinks at them...it is a horrible job.

They provide a service by taking your order and bringing it to you as any waiter or waitress so yes, you should tip the same as you would at any other restaurant.
