I switched from GEICO (I had been with them for years) and when GEICO asked why and I told them who I went with, they say "oh, yeah, there's no way we catch match their rates". USAA would not insure my beach house though, they said only if I were moving there on orders. They keep their rates low by only insuring low risk items (like military drivers, who are safer than civilians). I suspect their home owners and renters insurance rates are great.
(I told GIECO it made me feel like more of a caveman too, the girl on the phone laughed).

Everyone loves USAA, mostly because USAA is not a for-profit insurance company, it is a cooperative. Similar to the difference between a bank and a credit union.
So, their rates are lower, and they do not try to deny claims on technicalities.
USAA however will not insure high-risk frivolities, like my boat which has gained an unfair reputation as a smuggler's favorite and a danger to civilization.

Wow, I guess everyone's experience is different. When I was 18 they wanted $400 a MONTH to insure one car. I had never been in an accident or gotten a ticket. My car was a 4 door sedan, not a sports car or anything expensive. I HAD them for my homeowners insurance, but they cost 3 times as much as the company I am with now. The one time I put in a claim due to my roof being blown off by a hurricane, they proved themselves completely incompetent by:
1) forgetting to send my check for a month and a half (yes, they actually admitted this to me)
2) sending my check to the wrong address twice
3) keeping me on hold for no less than an hour and a half every time I called and usually I got hung up on at least once
I've heard good things and bad about them, but my experience was definitely BAD.

I just switched over to their car insurance. I haven't had to do a claim yet, but I have heard that they are very good when it comes to that. I have full coverage, with a 250 deductible on collision and a 100 deductible on comprehensive and we pay about $700 per year for my husband and I, ages 21 and 24!!! For that coverage, State Farm wanted $2000 per year. I would take advantage of their low rates while you are in the military, because even if you get out, you can still keep it for life. If you consider it a downside, there are no physical locations. You have to speak to them over the phone or internet. I know they are giving a discount right now if you order car insurance over the internet. If you have any problems, their customer service is great.

USAA is the finest company I know of.
They give you good rates on everything and they have the best customer service anywhere!
Working with USAA is such a wonderful experience I don't even shop around anymore. (and I used to allot because I'm cheap)
I use USAA for Home and Car insurance (for both cars), My Home loan, car Loan, two Credit Cards (both under 10%) Banking accounts, Investments, and they referred me to a Realtor for selling my old house and buying this one.
When was the last time anyone told you how much they loved "Bank of Amarica", "CitiBank", or "Farmers Insurance".
But don't take my word for it:

I've used them for 15 yrs, great service even if you find a lower rate; you cant count on USAA. I also financed cars, have credit cards (they'll handle disputed charges). You'd be crazy not to use them.

I use them for my banking, mortgage, home, and auto insurance and I have since 1986. They have the best rates. They also pay you a dividend check each year. I have always had outstanding service with them.
The only thing that I haven't used them for was a car loan. the Pentagon Federal Credit Union had better rates

We used GEICO for years until we moved to Germany, until GEICO started playing games with us when we moved to Germany. We called USAA and with 3 hours we had no more insurance problems. I used their rental discounts this summer and my rental went from $645 to $320. I have used their FTD Flowers and had no problems either!
