I think they are great dogs, but I believe they are predisposed to some undesirable genetic traits concerning temperament. I think it might be partly due to how they are trained though.

I'd definitely read up to make sure I'd be a good fit for a Doberman before making the commitment, but yes! Yes, I would buy one from a great breeder who would entertain my questions about this beautiful breed!
If adoption is an option, I'd adopt one in a heartbeat after doing my research. Then, instead of the breeder, I'd talk to as many Doberman people as I could (I'd do that anyway) to learn and to "talk dogs".

Yes and I already own one. Research the breed they are not the best for everyone. They require more exercise than most people realize, more training is an ongoing thing. You must be a firm consistant leader or you will end up with a pushy dog. Socialize, socialize, socialize! They are by nature very intellegent and are aloof with strangers, you have to socialize them from babies so that they dont consider 'strange things, people, sounds' etc a threat. They are naturally possessive of their own family and naturally protective.
Make absolutly sure you understand the health risks that the breed is prone to. Make sure you get a good reputable breeder and view at least the mother in person. Temperament is a large part genetic as are drives. What makes a good schutzund dog will drive the average pet owner nuts so be careful of dogs with high drives. Make sure they are raised around kids and cats even if you do not have them they should be taught from pups to accept them. Dont let kids abuse the dog either, a mutual respect should be expected from both.
If you know what your getting into they are awesome dogs, if you dont they can like any large breed that is not suited to its enviroment be a nightmare. They NEED to be with their people they do not make good yard dogs. They thrive on attention more than any other breed. They do not like cold, most think rain is acid from the sky, they are a very qwirky breed but those qwirks are what make them unique. They seem to be unusually prone to eating things they shouldnt and ending up with blockages, a good % of them do it their entire life not just as pups. Some will play with stuffed animals but some will eat the stuffing or rocks or socks etc. Many many dobes have ended up in emergency surgery because of a sock.
Go to a dog show, visit a dobe rescue, be around them in person, do some volunteer at the rescue, talk to dobe people about the good and the bad. Join dobe forums and learn about the breed before you decide. dobermantalk.com is a great forum.
Be aware that some insurance companies will not sell you home owners insurance if you own a dobe, people have preconcieved notions that they are evil so you will battle that mentality forever.

I have never owned one but some friends of mine had a male and a female. They looked like 2 dogs that were ready to rip your head off, however were 2 of the sweetest dogs I've ever been around. I personally think that any dog can be a GREAT dog if it has a good, responsible owner!

I like Dobermans, A lot of times they are trained to be mean and used as good guard dogs, although i used to have a neighbor that had one and when it would walk over to our yard to play with our dog my cat would chase it off!

Yes, Dobermans are great dogs--and yes, depending on my living situation and lifestyle at the time, I would love to have a Dobbie.

-What are your opinions on dogs and clothes? Almost always a ridiculous waste of time- only exception I know of are my friend's greyhounds that do need a jacket in the winter. -Does your dog sleep with you/his or her own bed/ floor/ wherevers convenient? Wherever he wants, which is pretty much always with me. -What tricks can your dog do? Sit until released, down until released, sit and down from a distance, and comes to a whistle. -What's the one toy (s)he can't live without? Anything that can be thrown and retrieved. -What breed is your dog(s)? Labrador Retriever -What is his/hers worst fear? That some day I'll stop throwing things for him to bring back. -Your opinion on mutts/crossbreds? Just dogs -Where did you get your dog? Local rescue -His/her favorite food? everything -Your opinion on dog breeding? Can be a benefit or a detriment to the breed -Your favorite breed? Labs and German Shorthairs Enjoy :)

I love Dobermans! Many have nice personalities and are fun to train. Nice looking athletic dogs. I dislike their many health problems though (hips, elbows, heart, von Willebrand's, Wobblers syndrome and so on). :-(

any dog is a good dog as long as you train it right. You need to tell us more about your living situation and how much time you have to care for the dog in order for us to help you find out if this type of dog is good for you & your personality
