Is there a chemical or something within the cheese that causes it to mold?

Mold floats around everywhere so it just takes a little moisture, milk sugar (mold food?) and a neutral/friendly environment for the mold to grow.

Well, cheese is an excellent medium for mold to grow upon. Moist, nutrient-rich, and if left at room temp, even better!

Some mold comes from within in the cheese. (The blue veins in blue cheese is actually a mold added to the cheese to develop that flavor.) Sometimes the mold is from outside the cheese, done when cutting, wrapping it, or otherwise exposing it to the air, which may have mold spores (microscopic) floating in it.
