A religion. A Muslim would never say it was a cult, or he'd be contradicting his own religion. Just as Christianity stemmed from Judaism, Islam stemmed from both. Although we certainly disagree on specific topics, we don't believe Christianity to be a cult. Although there are some cults that derived from a twisted interpretation of Christian teachings.

The Muslim that mentioned being "genetically mutated that went wrong."
According to the ancient history from Sumer, where civilization began. The Sumerians taught that we were all genetically mutated and changed to go wrong.
Through this change we became slaves to the gods who engineered this process. We lost all of our knowing we had in the garden of Eden after partaking of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Then the casting out of Eden was the process of the , genetic change, which left us unable to pertake of the tree of life and live for ever like the gods. Muslims, Christianity, Jewish faith, Mormons, Gnostic's and many other faiths are all Religions and none are cult. All religion's have truth within them, but as all Religions, none have all of the truth. But all came from the same source.

I believe it is a religion.

They have someone to worship. They have a system of morals and values.

They have customs and rituals.

They have a leader.

They have a gathering place.

Islamically, it is a religion because the belief in God exists, however skewed.
