i'd like to think that they do what they do because it's something they believe in.

Environmentalists are people who realize that without an environment we could not exist. The environment is everything around us, everything that is not us. Our environment provides us with food, habitat, air to breath, materials for shelter, clothing, everything we need.
Environmentalists recognize that depending on the way we live we can either destroy or maintain the environment and/or the resources within our environment.
They often understand the unintended consequences of some of our actions, consequences which may harm us, or other creatures, or future humans and creatures.
They try to explain these things to us.
They try to convince others to realize the importance of our environment and to make use of its resources in ways that do not deplete them completely or cause harm to human beings, creatures or the planet itself.

Because we want life on this planet to survive, and not to
die slowly while droughts and incresed heat obliterate fresh water for hundreds of millions, and render farming impossible. So that people can wander casually through their city without wearing masks to protect them from pollution. Because we love the gorgeous natual pristine natural landscape and the fascinating beautiful birds and animals that live in it; they are part of an ecological system that means if they perish,so do we.

Some people look into the future,
Some look back at the past.
Environment is changing, people need to understand this.
Think about a hole in your roof letting in water. Do nothing and it will get worse and worse until the water damage is so bad every thing is rotten and you need to knock the house down.
Fix the hole early and you have saved a big problem.
That's why they do what they do.

Me personally, I'd like to try and make this world a better place to live in. Plus I don't want to see the entire Appalation mountain range get strip mined for the coal.

It makes them feel important - as though they're a part of a movement that's sure to save mankind from himself.
I know - I was an Environ-Mental. Luckily, I grew up and started enjoying life in my mid-20's.
