We have an almost 4 month old great dane puppy. Shes about 35-40lbs already. We know we need to start her obidence training but have no clue if we should hire somebody or do it ourselves. Do you have any suggestions (or tips if we were to do it ourselves). THANKS!

As a long time Dane owner & a dog trainer I really recommend you get your puppy enrolled in a good obedience class...this wil lbe great for her socialization as well as getting her use to working around all types of distractions and teach her she must be well mannered no matter what the situation.

You should get her in a puppy class, however, you should not give your dane pup the rabies vaccine before 6 months at the earliest! This may stop you from enrolling her for a while yet if you haven't gotten it already.

Training is a great way for you and your puppy to bond. She needs to respect you, not some trainer who teaches her a few things, then is never seen again. A good trainer will help you train the dog. You have to be part of the process.

If you've never trained a puppy basic commands before, get a book, or you can watch Good Dog U on Animal Planet. It's not hard to do, you just have to be clear in what you want so she can understand, and consistent. Make it fun, and keep sessions 10 mins or less.
Good luck!

You should start with a puppy class, then move up from there.

Your dog needs the socialization of being around other dogs and people in a strange environment. I've met a St. Bernard that was not properly socialized and it was a SCARY sight. You have no idea what large dogs are capable of until you find one that has been improperly raised.

Please socialize and train your dog.

Yes I have some Alpha tips:
Eat before you feed her. Alpha dogs eat first and then give the subordiates scraps.
Order her around and give sit commands often.
If she happens to be in the way don't step over her, push her out of the way.
Get a good book for being an alpha dog.
